Steel of Tasril
As long as anyone can remember, anything further north than Helmcrest was covered by massive continental glaciers, and the land was subdued under the cold of an Ice Age. About two hundred years ago the climate began to warm, and the ice began to recede. A time of great wealth and abundance visited the land, and humanity began to spread once more.
19 years ago (4RF), hordes of savage humanoids – orcs, goblins, gnolls, giants – organized and began crossing the World’s Edge Mountains from the Red Waste. The invasion surprised the unsuspecting Human forces with its size and speed; until then, aggression from the Waste was limited to minor raids in the summer. The kingdom of Goldenhelm was hit hardest in the initial attack, and their forces were beaten back quite quickly. The first year of the war quite bloody and dire. High Priest Gesen Fallmore called Goldenhelm’s Elven and Dwarven allies for support, but reinforcement was meager and reluctantly given. The next year, Northerner forces lead by Draler Crendwyn, declared war on Golden Helm, taking advantage of the diversion.
In the 6th year of the Reign of Fallmore, the young and celebrated Phyis Malwhinn was appointed High Commander of Goldenhelm’s army, displacing Arendar Severaf. This is seen as a turning point in the Great War, because Malwhinn’s brilliant strategy was able to hold the double fronted war in stalemate. In the next nine years the fighting escalated, taking the war to Leros. The Dwarves were also beginning to feel the heat, as their valley homes were being besieged from all sides. Many lives were lost, and many settlements destroyed.
In the year 15RF the Council of Kings was held; this meeting brought together the leaders of Men, Elves, Eladrin and Dwarves, and brought about the creation of the Holy Empire of Tasril. The unification of these nations also unified their forces into one collective body named the Free Armies. Phyis Malwhinn was appointed the Commander of the Free Armies, and he immediately began reorganizing them into legions of mixed troops. The new composition was much more versatile and it gave the empire a decisive advantage on the battlefield, incorporating all the strengths of the races. The result was a stronger fighting force, whose diversity was complemented and meshed together by brilliant tactics.
In the following four years the empire won several key victories, and the goblinoid forces crumbled and retreated back to the Waste. In this time, the Northerner armies too were defeated, and the Northlands were consolidated. The Great War ended in 19RF, and since then the empire has rebuilt in relative peace.
Today, in the year 23RF, elements of the goblinoid invasion force have taken root in remote areas, but slowly they are being scoured away. Fjordmen still raid from the Feleas Ocean periodically, but goblinoid raids have ended almost completely in the west. Also, civil unrest in the north is down considerably, now that the Northmen have learned the benefits of empire life.
Recently, near the Icy Wastes in the north the remnants of strange civilization were found; further investigation uncovered several underground structures filled with treasures and artifacts. This discovery has become akin to a gold-rush for anyone seeking a life of adventure.
